Introduction
We all know about the famous Ruin bars of Budapest, but there are so many other fun things in Budapest to do.
Budapest is an amazing City for site seeing, and has some beautiful ,gothic architecture but we don’t talk about those things on here. We talk about fun, unique, out of the box things to do and there are loads of this type of thing in Budapest to do.
I am going to share a few of these below to give you some inspiration for your next trip!
Budapest Eye Ferris Wheel
Budapest, Erzsébet tér 1051, 1051 Hungary
Right in the heart of Budapest you will find the Ferris Wheel. This is the worlds largest traveling Ferris wheel and it stands at 200 feet tall! It has some of the best views of Budapest and is a great place to experience a bit of romance in this gorgeous city.
It has 42 cars so you will easily be able to hop on board.
For an even more romantic experience, check it out at night. With over 10,000 multicoloured lights there isn’t a more fun way to see Budapest and is a one of the loveliest things in Budapest to do.
Fisherman’s Bastion
Budapest, Szentháromság tér, 1014 Hungary
Now I don’t normally put historic buildings on my post but I have made an exception with this as visiting Fisherman’s Bastion took me right back to my childhood.
My favourite film as a kid was the Little Mermaid and as soon as I saw this building I felt like I had walked into a real life version of the Castle in the film.
Fisherman’s Bastion is STUNNING!!!! If you ever dreamed of pretending to be a princess for the day then this is where you need to go!
Of course it offers the most perfect insta backdrop and again it has spectacular views of Budapest.
It is clean, fresh and perfectly maintained.
You never know what you may stumble across too. (I saw a random guy holding an eagle whilst I was there…..I don’t know why, I think it was a photo op or something).
There is lots to do here and it is right next to the castle so you really could spend all day exploring, but I chose just to have a wonder around, take some photo’s and best of all stop for a coffee….They have I coffee shop within the grounds which I really liked.
Its free to enter and you will get to it by crossing the famous Chain Bridge too, so why not take a look. It is a lovely building and a fun thing in Budapest to do!
Budapest Castle Hill Funicular
Budapest, Clark Ádám tér, 1013 Hungary
Now it can be a bit of a treck getting to Fisherman’s Bastion and the Buda Castle so why not save the sweat and opt for something a bit different? It is one of the more unique things in Budapest to do and maybe not for the very faint hearted!
This funny little vertical train ride takes just a few minutes and won’t break the bank. It also offers a unique view of the city and has been in service since 1870.
The carriage come very frequently and it is fun slowly climbing up the hill, wondering if you are going to make it!
It is very cute and a little nerve wracking but highly recomended!
Zoo Café
Budapest, Fejér György u. 3, 1053 Hungary
Looking for some where to eat with a twist? Then head to the Zoo Cafe.
Eat lunch with the animals and enjoy interacting with some fury, or slithery friends!
You will be shown to your table where you can order food and drink but this is no ordinary cafe. Whilst enjoying your lunch the animal handlers will bring round lots of different animals for you to play and interact with, some cute, some a little less cute! Expect bunnies, Guinea Pigs, Tortoises, Snakes, Lizards and a whole lot more.
Keep an eye on your food though, there is a cheeky parrot that is just waiting for you to be distracted by all the fluffy animals so he can swoop in and nick your chips. (I found that pretty amusing to be honest)
You are responsible for keeping an eye on your allocated animal so please be gentle and make sure they don’t crawl too close to the edge of the table!
This is a popular attraction and a very fun thing in Budapest to do, so make sure you book ahead to save disappointment!
Michael Jackson Memorial Tree
Budapest, Erzsébet tér 7, 1051 Hungary
Yes you read that correctly! It is a tree (or some would say shrine) to the late Michael Jackson.
It is filled with fan art, messages and decorations. Not something you would expect to see but you will know you are in the right place once you have found it!
Its right in the heart of Budapest so I am sure you will come across it at some point within your trip but just in case, I have put the address under the header if you fancy tracking it down.
Not much more to say about this……..the header kind of says it all! One of the more random things in Budapest to do!
Electric Scooters
Most European towns have these, but Budapest was the first time I tried one and I instantly fell in love! I also feel its the safest city I have ridden them in too.
They are super cheap and a really easy way to get around. I used one to get from the City Centre to the Thermal baths and it saved a lot of money which would have gone on an Uber!
Download the lime app, enter your details, find a scooter, scan the QR code and off you go!
A few things to note……
- Make sure you pick a scooter with lots of battery, the map on the lime app will tell you where they are and how much battery they have left.
- Make sure you park the scooters in the correct place. Once you arrive at your destination, check the map on the app. If it is showing that you are in a red zone you cannot park there and you will need to drive back out to a green zone.
- Make sure you park your scooter in a considerate way/place. The app will ask you to take a picture of how you have parked your scooter at the end of your ride. You may get in trouble if you do not follow the guidelines correctly.
As long as you follow the above guidelines you’re good to go! In my opinion, there is no better way to see the City, and it is bloody fun too! One of the most fun things in Budapest to do!
Széchenyi Thermal Bath
Budapest, Állatkerti krt. 9-11, 1146 Hungary
Ok, I am going to be honest, this was not for me BUT only because I freak out when I go swimming in public pools (I have this weird thing about water and hygiene!) I am just not a huge fan of public pools in general so this was a little too much for me. I still gave it a go tough!
The Thermal Baths are MASSIVE! Boasting 12 pools, both indoor and outdoor.
They have a 2 lovely warm thermal baths outside so its a good activity whatever the weather! These baths do get busy though. And don’t be surprised if you see some locals chilling in the bath playing chess (apparently they do this every day)
It has some original features and you can see the history all around.
It is beautiful and it was an experience. I am glad I did it and would recommend everyone give it a try.
If you want a relaxing morning or afternoon, especially if you are trying to shift a hangover, then I would say do it!
They even have an evening party called a Sparty which actually does look REALLY fun! Its a night time rave in the outdoor baths, so I wouldn’t mind trying that out.
If, like me, you’re not keen on the idea of a large public bath, they also do a beer bath. This is a much more intimate experience with single baths full of….you guessed it….BEER! And obviously whilst sitting in the bath you can sip away on the best Hungarian beer. They also offer treatments too. I know what I will be trying next time I go! 😉
